El clasismo en el deporte que nadie ve

Cuando estaba en el colegio, siempre me pregunté por qué el profesor de educación física tenía sobrepeso y estaba tan quemado por el sol, ya que en las películas y en las series norteamericanas, estos profesores son el perfecto ejemplo de condición física y musculatura, y hasta miedo da desobedecer sus instrucciones. Yo pensé que la excepción se daba sólo en mi colegio. Sin embargo, con el tiempo me fui dando cuenta que en realidad a nivel nacional, los profesores que brindan este tipo de educación poseen el mismo aspecto, ya que muchos de estos no tienen instalaciones adecuadas y dan las clases bajo el perverso sol del mediodía. Además, este tipo de profesión no está bien remunerada, por lo que los que la ejercen deben tener más de dos trabajos para sobrevivir a nivel económico. Por lo tanto, no tienen tiempo para concentrarse en cumplir rigurosas dietas para mantener a tope con su físico, puesto que hay otras prioridades con las que tienen que lidiar.

Aquí hay otro punto que debo tocar: estos profesores son de clase baja o, muy pocas veces, de clase media. En muchos casos en las escuelas públicas y en algunos colegios pequeños, los profesores que brindan esta clase de educación física ni siquiera son profesionales graduados en esta rama, sino que son profesores a los que simplemente se les asignó dar la clase de deportes, porque no había nadie más que pudiera darla la clase en ese momento y/o era su hora libre.

¿Qué sucede aquí? ¿Qué sucede si un joven recién graduado de bachiller general de clase media alta les dice a sus padres que desea estudiar la carrera de educación física? Los padres le responden indignados: Hijo, esa carrera es de pobres. Eso es lo que sucede: el deporte es considerado cosa de pobres en El Salvador. Una perspectiva tan cerrada como esta sólo puede surgir de la miseria deportiva y cultural que existe en el país. Con esto, no estoy diciendo que las personas de hogares humildes no tengan derecho a ser profesionales en el deporte; de hecho conozco muchos casos de éxito. Lo que estoy diciendo es que es una problemática cultural y social la que se está dando, y nadie la nota o trata de hacer algo al respecto. Parte del problema recae en el funcionamiento del instituto de los deportes, dónde la prioridad claramente no es profesionalizar el deporte.

Voy a mencionarles un caso muy indignante. La ahora diputada Cristina López proviene de un barrio humilde, pero ella mostró tener aptitudes en el atletismo, específicamente en marcha. Ella fue la primera atleta salvadoreña en ganar Los Juegos Panamericanos en este rubro con una medalla de oro. Y siguió ganando más medallas de este tipo, pero entonces, ¿qué pasó después? Logró llegar al mundial y lo perdió por una simple razón: estaba embarazada y esto le costó las olimpiadas y casi una medalla segura para El Salvador. Entonces este problema es: ¿cultural, deportivo, social o qué?

Es más, sea de la procedencia social que sea, este no es el proceso indicado para ningún atleta que desee dedicarse y especializarse de forma profesional en cualquier deporte. En principio, es pecado mortal no enseñarles de ética deportiva. Es una falta de cultura la que se ha cometido. Los atletas o deportistas necesitan que se les forme más allá de sólo el físico. Necesitan educación social, cultural y disciplinaria. Necesitan aprender a controlar su estado mental para saber cómo lidiar con la presión de las competencias y sus problemas del día a día ¿Cómo es posible que exista un sólo psicólogo para varias federaciones? ¡Esto es un crimen! Es un insulto para los deportistas que se les ofrezca tan poco apoyo en todos los aspectos. Casi que pareciera ser aceptable que esta joven se quedara con la misma mentalidad limitada que tenía antes de convertirse en atleta, y en lugar de fomentarle una educación superior, resulta que a este tipo de atleta, la política le ofreció el puesto de diputada. ¿Qué les parce?

Este es sólo un ejemplo ya que hay muchos más, y lo lamentable es que manchan la imagen del mundo deportivo en El Salvador. Lo peor es que las personas u otros atletas no se atreven a hablar de ello, porque les incomoda tocar el tema de clases sociales, y prefieren quedarse seguros dentro de su burbuja de conformidad. Sin embargo, la realidad es tal cuál: el resentimiento social es fomentado en esta filosofía donde la mayoría de los deportes son cosa de pobres.

Podemos decir que no existe una visión a nivel nacional de llevar los deportes más allá del horizonte en el cual ya se encuentran enjaulados. O es un deporte de ricos o es un deporte de pobres, en la mayoría de los casos. ¿Por qué hay deportes encasillados como algo para la clase alta, como el squash, la equitación o las escaladas, que no ofrecen un espacio a los individuos de escasos recursos con habilidades? ¿O por qué es tan criticado socialmente que un individuo de una familia adinerada desee convertirse en un jugador de futbol? ¿Por qué se fomenta tanto extremismo?

Lo que se debería estar fomentando, en cambio, es una visión que busque apoyar al joven que posea habilidades atléticas para un deporte en particular, indiferentemente de la clase social de donde provenga, y le brinde las herramientas necesarias para que pueda convertirse en un verdadero profesional en este ámbito. Si el deporte se convierte en elite, es sólo porque así lo decide cierto público, pero ¿qué tan educado está el público? ¿Qué sabe este público de ética y cultura deportiva? Esta pobreza cultural, y este clasismo deportivo debe terminar ya o no podremos progresar como país.
